Abra woodpusher wins 9th Weekly Blitz Chess

COMPUTER Science graduate Rowie Glen Artiena scored a total of eight points and lost only in a single game to claim the open division title of the 9th Weekly Blitz Chess tournament at the BCM Chess gallery recently.
Artiena, a fresh graduate from Data Center College, stopped former champion John Soriano who settled for second place despite having a similar eight points with Artiena of the nine-game round robin event supported by lawyer Jose Molintas.
Manny Vergara, who had a 5.5 aggregate, settled for third, while Alex Valdez salvaged fourth place honors with five points.
Artiena, together with Soriano, will join previous winners Alvin Mariano, Geron Bes-ong, Mark Castillo, Wilbur Suanding and Frederick Bintudan for the quarterly championship.
In the kiddies’ side, Jamel Nelmida made it a University of Baguio (UB) affair after topping the category with four points.
Nelmida of the UB High School edged fellow schoolmate Steven Managati, who lost to the eventual champion and settled for the first runner–up honors.
Wycliff Aromin, meanwhile, settled for second runner-up honors after scoring victories against Aaron Nache Manaoat of UB Laboratory Elementary School and last placer Jhona Nelmida who failed to win a single contest.
Blitz chess is a type of chess game where each side is given less time to make their moves than under the normal tournament with a time of 3 to 5 minutes per side. (Roderick Osis)

Veteran John-John Mendoza firmed up his reputation as the region’s speed chess king by topping the first Baguio City Chess Blitz Championship held on June 4, at the Cherwai Billiard Hall along Assumption Road that drew 30 participants.
Played under the double round robin format, the tournament marked the first time that games were limited to five minutes each using the standard chess clocks as timers.
Mendoza scored nine points out of possible 10 to crown himself champion, followed by Frederick Bintudan in second with 8.5 points, Mark Castillo in third with seven points, and Federico Luzada, Jr. in fourth place with 6.5 points.
Other participants who made it to the top 10 finalists only to bow out in the stretch included Conrad Agaton, Glen Rowie Artienda, and Wilbur Suanding.
The second leg of the tournament will be held on June 18 in the same venue.
Organized by Al Rolluda, the tournament is supervised by nationally-accredited arbiter Ted Sarmiento.

Hundreds seen in weekend chess, scrabble tournaments

Rivalry is expected to heat up in the collegiate level as Saint Louis University tries to go full throttle against arch nemesis, University of Baguio, in chess.
The two schools slugged it out last year in the annual Baguio–Benguet Educational Athletic League where SLU won the women’s side while UB took the men’s division.

In the high school side, UB and Baguio City National High School are expected to square it off anew when they meet in the second staging of the tournament now backed by YMCA Baguio and Shell Station.
Now the bitter rivals, UB has a lot at stake when it goes up against the defending champion in the chess side of the tournaments, BCNHS, bannered by the Nillo siblings.
The event is We Can, Inc.’s campaign to boost alumni support in school sport will be launched with a chess and Scrabble tournament next month.
Out of towners are also expected to play in said competition which will augment what the students will learn in tile pushing with a special add-on in the second day when professional players will come in for an eight round competition using the King of the Hill mode. (Roderick Osis)

The city’s youngest FIDE master is all set to play against the best woodpushers in Southeast Asia in Subic.
High school senior Haridas Pascua of the University of Baguio started his campaign early last week in the Asean and age-group chess championships together with other top junior players in the region—all vying for top honors at the Verona Hall of the Traveler’s Hotel inside the Subic Bay Freeport in Subic.
Pascua, a regular fixture in world youth championships, is competing in the 20 and under boys category.
Joining FIDE Master Pascua in the tournament are fellow FM Jan Emmanuel Garcia and reigning national juniors champion NM Paulo Bersamina, who will all spearhead the locals’ participation in the competitions that will also feature young chess champions from Russia, Australia, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the US.
The other local bets are Mari Joseph Turqueza, Alcon John Datu, Richelieu Salcedo III, and Alfredo Rapanot in the boys 20-under.
Jan Nigel Galan, Christian Flores, McDominique Lagula, and Marc Nazario will be competing in the boys 16 under while Austin Jacob Literatus, Vince Angelo Medina, and Allan Pason will be in the boys 14 under.
Pascua, a native of Pangasinan with an ELO rating of 2358, will be in a tough field during the three-day competition.
Pascua is the city’s youngest national master who played in several world chess championships.
Meanwhile, a total of 31 chess players from Baguio and Benguet have qualified to vie for honors in the mid-year “battle of champions” hosted by the Kordilyera Chess Association at the Baptist Calvary Church along Guisad Central on June 19-20.
Roger Garcia, KCA vice president, said attractive cash prizes and trophies awaits the over-all champion and second to 5th places.
“The tournament will determine whose who in so far as local chess competition is concerned,” he said.
The list of qualifiers included Conrado Agaton, Hirector Aliten, Ronald Alvez, Marvin Badua, Inso Balangue, Marcelo Banawol, Peter Bantasan, Frederick Bintudan, Bong Busados, Julio Busaing, Edgar Castro, Ramil Delos Reyes, Oscar Guanzon, Rafael Kimmayong, Marvin Limocon, Wendelle May Aromin, Rolly Manuel, John John Mendoza, Jeff Dindo Maslang, Shan Paul Nillo, Bernard Nillo Jr., Carl Nillo, Raymond Passi, Justine Pasciole, Daryhl Kipas, Wilbur Suanding, Lawrence Whiyte, Joseph Kitma III, Bert Uyan, Felicisimo Vestidas Jr. and Loreto Furing.
Garcia said it is anybody’s ballgame considering the equity in strength.
“The veterans of course will have the edge but there is no discounting the younger talents from excelling,’ he said.
Delos Reyes topped the May edition of the KCA’s monthly tournament, followed by Manuel, Busados, Pascioles, and Shan Paul Nillo in that order.
All were awarded cash and trophies for their efforts.
First Ifugao kiddie chess tournament conducted

Lagawe, Ifugao (26 June 2009 First Ifugao kiddie chess tournament conducted) -- In an effort to discover the skills of the young particularly in the field of sports, the Ifugao Chess club conducted recently a chess tournament for kids here.
Kennedy Bongolan, President of the Ifugao Chess Club said that this is one way of exposing the children in competitions. We are helping them discover their skills or talents as young as they are, he said.
The first ever tournament to include the participation of the kids aging 12 years old and below, and 13 years old and above, Bongolan disclosed that the activity is in line with the Department of Education's memorandum to include school children in order to enhance their talents.
Bungolan also said that this is a venue for the sports committee to discover new and young talents who might compete locally, at the national level and even internationally.
Participated by the different schools all over the province, children who were non participants but were there watching became interested and expressed their willingness to join in future competitions. This is one way of helping mold the young minds so they will not be influenced by vices that might destroy their future, Bongolan said.
Kenneth Dango of Lamut bagged the first place; Micah Salvador of Kiangan got the second place, third is Jimmy Jess Dango of Lagawe, fourth is John Dominong Bongolan of Hingyon and also received a special prize for being the youngest players and fifth Damiano Anselmo Jr of Lagawe who got a consolation prize.
In Category II where kids aging 13 years old and above competed, Frederick Bintudan of Lagawe got first place; second is Telesporo Dinamling of Asipulo and third Victor Dango of Lamut. (PIA-Ifugao)

The Story:
Odette Rio of Iloilo City beats Pakorn Nemitrmansuk of Thailand in the final round, 472-301 to cop her 9th consecutive Baguio championship title since Nationals 2004. They actually met nine times of the 18 rounds Straight King-of-the-Hill format in the two-day battle held at the Baguio Country Club (BBC) last weekend. The event coincided with the Flower Festival other known as "Panagbenga" which attracted 39 word wizards from different regions including Pakorn of Thailand.
Pakorn finished at 2nd with 12-6, +1134 win-loss-spread record. Pakorn, a two time WSC Runner-up winner held Odette's ground in round 16, 395-341 and 17, 478-434 to tie her with 12 wins apiece before succumbing in the final round. At board 2, Ronald Credo of Quezon City prevailed over Teejay de Jesus of Laguna, 407-371 for a 3rd place finish with 12 wins and +898 spread dropping the latter to 5th spot with 12 wins and -52 spread. At board 3, Robbie Onate of Los Banos edged Col. Andy Aquino of Lipa City, 377-373 to position himself in the 4th place.
Rounding off the top ten were Leonora Labog 11 +591, Renante dela Cerna 11 +444, Andy Aquino Sr. 11 +431, Louie Mark de Guzman 11 +291 and Antonio Malonzo 10 +489.
Odette recounted her round 12 win over Pakorn, 504-440 with 7 bingos played between them. Despite the 9-timer ANOESTRA by Pakorn, Odette still won the game with 4 natural bingos (VIDEOFIT, GUTTERS, YARROWS and EYESOME). In their other game, a nine letter word was also spotted by Odette to win the game with her last rack as ?ADEENR fitting thru IN. After the awarding, Pakorn was requested to say something about his Baguio experience and he thanked Huub Luyk, the Baguio Benguet Club for Scrabble (BBCS) President, Leonora Labog who invited him and all the players. He described Odette as "Queen of the Hill". He mentioned also that he travelled a lot, he went to USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Bangalore, etc. and now Baguio City. BBCS announced the Camp John Hay Tourney will be held on Sept 01-02, 2007 and Pakorn confirmed to participate provided Odette would play. Meanwhile, Teejay could have won 2nd place had he spotted the bingo with his final rack ?DEINOW thru floating E in the last round. Renante dela Cerna of Cebu City likewise missed RUNKLES to hook S in front of CUDDLE in his middlegame against Col. Andy Aquino and lose the game.
Special prize was awarded to player who could play a "Most Flowery Word" with a high score and Malou Flores had BEGONIA (a tropical herb). Before this, Robbie Onate claimed SILURID as a flowery word, but when Huub checked the definition in the dictionary, it reads: any of a family of catfishes, which drew laughters from the participants. At one time, Abe Gogoling shouted after he playedBACKSIGHT in his game, and announced that this is also a flower, to the delight of the players.
High word goes to Delio Dimaano. For the high game, Robbie Onate had 615 and Pakorn had 585 but since no player should win more than one prize, Huub Luyk was next in line with 550 to receive the prize. Top student player was awarded to Frederick Bintudan as Louie Mark de Guzman already had a prize. Abe Gogoling won the top local player award.
Another surprise prize was announced before the 1st round that whoever beats Pakorn first would earn P1,000.00. Odette Rio did it in round 5, 501-383 and Ronald Credo duplicated this feat in round 13, 482-449 but nobody got the prize since both had already received major prizes and no other players defeated Pakorn, so no one got this special prize.
In this particular tourney, BBCS implemented a spread cap with a maximum of 200 points. Huub Luyk referred his idea with Thailand who used a much higher spread cap of 350.
Word Source reference was SOWPODS 2006 (SOWPODS2003+TWL2006). Lexpert was used in the adjudication for accuracy of challenges. Philippines started adopting these lexicons since March 2006.
Other houserules included time forfeit. A player will automatically loses the game when his/her time clock exceeded the 25 minutes time limit. Overtime in digital would be at least -00:01. If the player was ahead at that time, his/her spread would be -50 while opponent would be +50. If the player was behind at that time, the current spread or -50 whichever is higher shall be used. Pakorn finished at 2nd with 12-6, +1134 win-loss-spread record. Pakorn, a two time WSC Runner-up winner held Odette's ground in round 16, 395-341 and 17, 478-434 to tie her with 12 wins apiece before succumbing in the final round. At board 2, Ronald Credo of Quezon City prevailed over Teejay de Jesus of Laguna, 407-371 for a 3rd place finish with 12 wins and +898 spread dropping the latter to 5th spot with 12 wins and -52 spread. At board 3, Robbie Onate of Los Banos edged Col. Andy Aquino of Lipa City, 377-373 to position himself in the 4th place.
Rounding off the top ten were Leonora Labog 11 +591, Renante dela Cerna 11 +444, Andy Aquino Sr. 11 +431, Louie Mark de Guzman 11 +291 and Antonio Malonzo 10 +489.
Odette recounted her round 12 win over Pakorn, 504-440 with 7 bingos played between them. Despite the 9-timer ANOESTRA by Pakorn, Odette still won the game with 4 natural bingos (VIDEOFIT, GUTTERS, YARROWS and EYESOME). In their other game, a nine letter word was also spotted by Odette to win the game with her last rack as ?ADEENR fitting thru IN. After the awarding, Pakorn was requested to say something about his Baguio experience and he thanked Huub Luyk, the Baguio Benguet Club for Scrabble (BBCS) President, Leonora Labog who invited him and all the players. He described Odette as "Queen of the Hill". He mentioned also that he travelled a lot, he went to USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Bangalore, etc. and now Baguio City. BBCS announced the Camp John Hay Tourney will be held on Sept 01-02, 2007 and Pakorn confirmed to participate provided Odette would play. Meanwhile, Teejay could have won 2nd place had he spotted the bingo with his final rack ?DEINOW thru floating E in the last round. Renante dela Cerna of Cebu City likewise missed RUNKLES to hook S in front of CUDDLE in his middlegame against Col. Andy Aquino and lose the game.
Special prize was awarded to player who could play a "Most Flowery Word" with a high score and Malou Flores had BEGONIA (a tropical herb). Before this, Robbie Onate claimed SILURID as a flowery word, but when Huub checked the definition in the dictionary, it reads: any of a family of catfishes, which drew laughters from the participants. At one time, Abe Gogoling shouted after he playedBACKSIGHT in his game, and announced that this is also a flower, to the delight of the players.
High word goes to Delio Dimaano. For the high game, Robbie Onate had 615 and Pakorn had 585 but since no player should win more than one prize, Huub Luyk was next in line with 550 to receive the prize. Top student player was awarded to Frederick Bintudan as Louie Mark de Guzman already had a prize. Abe Gogoling won the top local player award.
Another surprise prize was announced before the 1st round that whoever beats Pakorn first would earn P1,000.00. Odette Rio did it in round 5, 501-383 and Ronald Credo duplicated this feat in round 13, 482-449 but nobody got the prize since both had already received major prizes and no other players defeated Pakorn, so no one got this special prize.
In this particular tourney, BBCS implemented a spread cap with a maximum of 200 points. Huub Luyk referred his idea with Thailand who used a much higher spread cap of 350.
Word Source reference was SOWPODS 2006 (SOWPODS2003+TWL2006). Lexpert was used in the adjudication for accuracy of challenges. Philippines started adopting these lexicons since March 2006.
Other houserules included time forfeit. A player will automatically loses the game when his/her time clock exceeded the 25 minutes time limit. Overtime in digital would be at least -00:01. If the player was ahead at that time, his/her spread would be -50 while opponent would be +50. If the player was behind at that time, the current spread or -50 whichever is higher shall be used. BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 16) — Leonora Labog won the Baguio Scrabble Tournament Sunday at the Villa Cordillera.
The Quezon City-based Labog was already assured of the title as early as the 14th round of the 16-round King of the Hill tournament when she beat local top bet William Caluza, 388-306, as her 1010 spread (combined score less combined opponent’s score) was already beyond the reach of any of her opponents.
Baguio based Information Technology instructor Abe Gogoling, who was running second with nine wins and her next opponent made the game more exciting as he defeated Labog, 380-335, in the next round.
However, he needed to win by as much as 244 points to catch up with the latter’s spread to snatch the victory in the event supported by National Irrigation Administration chief Arturo Lomibao, Villa Cordillera and Lexico.
Labog trailed Gogoling by as much as 30 points going into her last tiles when she played DRUXY and surprised the latter for a 363-358 win as an icing to her victory.
Labog finished the tournament with 12 wins against four loses and a spread of 970. Gogoling settled for second place with 10 wins and spread of 473.
Labog, member of the Mensa club of genius, came in the absence of the top guns like two-time champion Odette Rio and top-rated Filipino player Ronald Credo whose wife gave birth before the tourney started.
She was seeded second at the start of the tournament and came out the winner with her donning the tourney shirt for champion and P10,000 the richer.
La Union-based professor, the top seed, Roger Parchamento blasted Caluza on the second board, 390-315, as the top seed took third place with a slate of 10-6 and 454 spread, while Caluza settled for fourth place with the same card but lower spread of 202.
Local pride actually was high that day as another Baguio-based scrabbler joined the money train with Malou Coronacion getting fifth spot when she nipped 2003 champion retired police colonel Antonio Malonzo, 365-361. Coronacion finished with a 9-7 slate in tie with Henry Pacifico but took the fifth by virtue of a higher spread of 185 against the 74 of the latter.
Other winners in the event are: Fred Bintudan, the top local player, as well as spouses Huub and Becky Luyk for finishing second and third best local players in the event, who are also backed up by Baguio Rep. Mauricio Domogan, acting Baguio Mayor Peter Rey Bautista, DPWH-Cordillera Director Mariano Alquiza, Eng’r. Ernesto Paraon, Joderek Bautista, Nestor Wong, Caltex-Legarda, 50s Diner, Rumours, Axa Philippines, Rotary Club of Baguio Sunrise, Alpha Pet Care and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines-Cordillera.

Arroyo, 2 others pace Shell chessfest
BAGUIOS TOP seed Christian Arroyo streaked to his fourth straight win, beating Frederick Bintudan to gain a share of the lead with Jayson Salubre and Eugene Pimentel in the Northern Luzon leg of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships at SM Baguio in Baguio City Saturday.
Arroyo, one of the promising players in the junior ranks today, hopes to sustain his momentum in the last three rounds of the seven-round Swiss system tournament in a bid to atone for his mediocre showing in the kickoff leg of the eight-stage nationwide circuit sponsored by Pilipinas Shell two weeks ago at SM Manila.
Joining Arroyo at the helm with 4 points in the junior division, exclusively for players 20 years old and below are Salubre and Pimentel who swamped Joel Valdez and Nikki Jime-nez, respectively while erstwhile coleaders Lyndon Sombilon and Nelson Mariano settled for a draw to lead the big group of 3.5 pointers.
That includes Arnold Dableo and Jan Paragua, who also drew their match, Aaron Rivas, James Bulicatin, Alex Siblangan and Mismar Mesina.
Earlier, Bobby Kana-pi, general manager for external affairs of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., and Hon. Domingo Bayan, former mayor of Boguias, Benguet and CEO of Benguet Gov.
